It was a game of surges for the Explorers in Thursday’s victory over Springfield (Delco). In the end, La Salle College High School took a 9-5 win over the 18-5 Cougars.
At 14-7, La Salle ranks 41st in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings and 4th in Pennsylvania. Already champions of the Philadelphia Catholic League, the Explorers have now turned their sights on the state title.
Getting off to a slow start, La Salle failed to score in the first quarter, but dominated the second, taking a 5-3 lead into halftime. In the third, the Explorers cool off, only netting one goal; however, they kept Springfield off the board, leading to a three-goal advantage going into the final quarter.
Things got tricky for La Salle when the Cougars converted on two opportunities early in the fourth, cutting the Explorers’ lead down to just one, at 6-5. Mitch Soufleris found the response to Springfield’s attempt, scoring one of his three goals, killing the Cougars’ momentum. Scoring another two goals, La Salle took a comfortable four-goal lead to close out the game.
Along with Soufleris’ impressive offensive performance, Aidan Kerrigan and Steve Hudak added to the Explorers’ cause with two goals each.
Now La Salle advances to face Penncrest on Saturday, May 31. The Lions’ 22-1 record places them at 25th on the national scale and 3rd in the state. La Salle will have its hands full as it moves on to the second round.
